In my case, the vehicle is a 98 626 v6; 72,000 miles. Garaged in Augusta, GA.
The Check light has come on, and has been serviced appropriately more than 9 times by dealer since new. Dealer has exhaused his ideas. Computer has been recently changed, wiring inspected, O2 sensor changed numerous times. California Mazda administrative office got involved last year, but couldn't help. Changing O2 sensor helps for about 1-2000 miles.
The light is on again, and I just ignore it. Engine sounds great at all speeds. Any ideas out there?

: I finally decided to go to the dealer (Mazda) and have a full tune up (I was due for a service at 64000Km, anyways, and was at 63000Km), and have the problem looked into.
: They checked all the wiring, lubricated everything, checked my pistons and the alternator, the clutch (the car is a standard), the battery and the radior. Found out my Mass Air Flow sensor needed to be changed (good thing it was under an extended warranty).
: Now, not even 800Km later, the engine light comes on again?!!??
: I hear a faint rattle noise when I'm around 1700/2700 rpm, and the engine is a bit noisier than it used to be (figured the car is ageing so it must be normal), you know, like a (very small) plane taking off (heard from the inside).
: Any ideas on what the problem might be? Another sensor? Would you recommend going to an independant garageman rather than to the dealer? (the rates are very similar).
